Amazon KDP: Setting Up Your Book for Success
A walk-through of Amazon KDP setup, from metadata to categories to A+ content, with tips to maximize discoverability.
What Is Amazon KDP?
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is Amazon's self-publishing platform. It's the fastest way to get your book in front of millions of readers.
Before You Upload
Ensure your files are ready:
- Ebook: EPUB format, with a clickable table of contents
- Print: PDF with proper bleed, margins, and embedded fonts
- Cover: JPEG/TIFF at 300 DPI, following KDP's template dimensions
Metadata That Matters
Your title, subtitle, and description are your sales pitch.
Title and subtitle — Include keywords naturally. The subtitle is your chance to add searchable terms.
Description — Use HTML formatting (bold, headings, bullet points). Lead with a hook, not a summary.
Keywords — You get 7 keyword fields. Use long-tail phrases, not single words. Think 'cozy mystery set in Scotland,' not 'mystery.'
Categories — Choose the most specific sub-category available. Ranking #1 in a niche category is more valuable than #500 in a broad one.
KDP Select: Is It Worth It?
KDP Select enrolls your ebook in Kindle Unlimited and gives you promotional tools. In exchange, your ebook must be exclusive to Amazon for 90 days. It works well for series and genre fiction; less so for nonfiction that benefits from wide distribution.
A+ Content
After publishing, add A+ Content to your detail page. Enhanced descriptions with images and comparison charts can significantly boost conversion.
Launch Day
Build momentum before launch. Collect pre-orders, line up reviews, and run a modest ad campaign. The first 30 days of sales velocity heavily influence Amazon's long-term recommendations.
